8-14 October 2007 To highlight the dramatic decline in European shark populations, the role Europe plays in the global shark trade, and the threat that European Union's poor shark policies pose to sharks around the world, the Shark Alliance proclaimed 8-14 October European Shark Week. Find out more. Make your fin count! The Shark Alliance asked Europeans to demonstrate their support for improved shark conservation by encouraging them to submit a comment on-line or sign up on-the-ground. Over 20,000 people made their fin count and the virtual comments and signatures collected on the ground were presented to the European Commission on 8 November. Check our events section to see what went on near you. Although European Shark week is now over there are still a number of actions you can take to help improve European shark conservation: Sign up to the scientists' statement If you have (at least) a masters degree or equivalent in a marine-related science you can sign up to the scientists’ statement calling on EU Member States' Ministers and fisheries managers to ensure conservation of sharks and rays in European waters and in waters where the EU fleet is fishing.
